10 Hypertensive Diet Recipes
(Translated from Cypress Multimedia's "Chinese Weekly" vol 228)
高血壓食療10妙方

(1) Celery porridge: Celery with roots 120 grams, 250 grams of rice. Wash the celery, cut into pieces, approximately 6 inches long apiece. Wash rice and put them into a pot; add an appropriate amount of water. Cook until water boils for a few minute, than turn to slow cook until rice becomes porridge (roughly 30 to 45 minutes). Add a little salt and flavor, stir well and serve.

(2) Chrysanthemum porridge: 15 grams of chrysanthemum tips, 100 grams of rice. Remove pedicles from the flowers, steam then dry them under the sun (or dried out im room temperature if time allows). Then ground the dried flowers into a fine powder and set aside. Wash rice and put in a pot with water. Cook with high temperature until water boils then switch to slow cook until rice is half cooked. Add chrysanthemum powder and continue with slow cook until rice turns into porridge. (30 to 45 minutes). Serve twice a day.

(3) Kelp and mung bean porridge: 100 grams each of mung beans and kelp tapes; reasonable amount of rice. Chopped kelp tapes into sections; cook mung beans, kelp tapes and water into porridge. Can be used long-term for dinner.

(4) Lotus leaf porridge: One piece of fresh lotus leaf, 100 grams of rice, a small amount of rock sugar. Wash and cook the lotus leave with water, then add rice and rock suger. Slow cook them into porridge. Serve the porridge warm for breakfast and dinner.

(5) Peanuts soaked in vinegar: Raw peanuts soaked in vinegar for 5 days. 10 to 15 per serving every morning. Besides lowering blood pressure, it is also effective for stop bleeding and lower cholesterol.

(6) Sweet and sour garlic: Soak a number of large garlic cloves in vinegar with sugar added, for at least a month. Eat six pieces of garlic a day, and drink 20 ml of the sweet and sour sauce. Continue such daily serving for a month. This recipe is even effctive for for resistant hypertension.

(7) Apocynum Schisandra Tea: *** Apocynum venetum (dogbane leaves 羅布麻葉) 6 grams, Schisandra (五味子) 5 grams, (can be obtained from a Chinese Herbal Medicine store) a small amount of rock sugar. Use these materials to brew tea with boiling water. Frequeently drinking this tea can lower blood pressure, improve blood pressure symptoms, and prevent coronary heart disease.

(8) Polygonum porridge jujube: *** Polygonum multiforum (a.k.a. tuber fleece flower 何首烏) 60 grams, add water to cook to concentrated sauce. Use sauce only; add 100 gm of rice, 3 to 5 jujubes (大棗) and rock sugar, cook them into porridge. Serve porridge twice a day (breakfast and dinner). This porridge benefits the liver, kidney, blood contents, grey hair as well as lowering blood pressure.

(9) Mussels and shepherd's purse soup : Make soup with mussels, shepherd's purse (or celery) 10 to 30 grams. Drink the soup once a day, for 15 days. Effective in antihypertensive.

(10) Carrot Juice: Drink approximately 1000 ml per day, in separate intervals. Medical research shows that patients with hypertension who drink carrot juice have significant antihypertensive effect.
